Trader Joe's Lacey Swiss & Colby Cheese

2016 Update: Trader Joe's no longer carries this product. It's a shame because it was such a treat when making sandwiches. Another example of the "easy come, easy go" frustrations of low sodium shopping.

If you are on a lower sodium diet, you know how problematic cheese can be. It's very difficult to find truly low sodium cheese choices in your local grocery stores. Usually plain, old-fashioned Swiss cheese is much lower in sodium than other cheeses. The same goes for fresh mozzarella. Safeway sells its very low sodium Primo Taglio lacy Swiss cheese slices and Lucerne no-salt-added cottage cheese.

But still, dealing with cheese is a challenge. That's why I got so excited to discover the Swiss & Colby combination at Trader Joe's. The cheese slices are very similar to Safeway's Primo Taglio lacy Swiss slices and the Alpine Lace Swiss slices. However, it's a marbled cheese with orange and cream colored streaks. A serving is one slice, and the slice contains only 35 mg sodium. Now that's great news!

The slices are large, thin and lacy, full of holes. Perfect for sandwiches, wraps, or omelets. Many thanks to Mei who let me know about this product. If you've got a Trader Joe's nearby, check this cheese out.

Losomarcia, I know what you mean. It seems every time I go to Trader Joe's I find something new to try. That's what makes shopping there so much fun. I appreciate the store because it has so many low sodium options. Right now my favorites are the no-salt-added canned tomato products, the salt-free salsa, the two salt-free breads, and the lavash wraps. But there are more products available. Have fun on your next trip!

My mom has been buying this left and right, and it is delicious. Nice change from the 25mg Kraft thin swiss she had been buying. She has also been buying white and sourdough bread from Whole Foods which has around 35mg of sodium per slice (bakery area, clear bag, square white label). Other great finds at Whole foods are salt-free salsa, very low sodium turkish salad (like salsa but sweet with roasted red bell peppers.. find near salsa), 4 different types of very low sodium chips (0mg-25mg)including this big bag of extremely thin tortilla chips that have zero sodium. I am not on a low sodium diet myself but we tend to grocery shop together and after eating some of the things she has been buying I have found that I generally prefer low-sodium foods, especially chips.

Srsly?, thanks so much for your comment. And a special thanks for sharing some other low sodium products you've been able to find at Whole Foods. We all definitely need to work together when it comes to eating low sodium. I'm going to search for the Turkish Salad you mentioned next time I'm in Whole Foods. Sounds really good.

Best to you and your mom!

I was told 2-days ago that Trader Joes has discontinued selling sliced Lacey Marbled Swiss & Colby Cheese & they could not tell me where to get it. Does anyone kow if it is available anywhere else? I live in Los Angeles.

It's always disappointing when a really good low sodium product is discontinued. Usually because of poor sales. I haven't found the TJ Lacey Swiss & Colby either. I'm back to buying the lowest sodium regular Swiss cheese slices that I can find.
